Benjamin Avery
“Benjamin F. Avery, 74, of 6075 Jacaranda Way, Carpinteria, died early today at Pinecrest Hospital of cancer. No services are planned.
“He was born Aug. 18, 1906 in Santa Barbara to Elizabeth and Alfred Avery. His father was a prominent building contractor who constructed Peabody Stadium and participated in the planning for the first Fiesta in 1924.
“The president of Seaside Oil Co., from 1963 until his retirement in 1967, Mr. Avery started work with the company in 1937 as a service station manager.
“In 1940 in Las Vegas, he married Anita “Pete” Avery, who died in 1979.
“During World War II, he served as a pilot and flight instructor in the Army Air Corps, attaining the rank of captain and training pilots to fly the B-17 Flying Fortresses.
“After the war, he returned to Seaside, becoming sales manager and eventually a member of the board of directors. He also served as a member of the Bank of America’s regional advisory board for the Santa Barbara area, and in his spare time, he enjoyed hunting in the Central Coast area.
“Survivors include two sisters, Gladys Trott of Santa Barbara and Dorothy King of Gardena; a brother, A. J. “Bud” Avery of Santa Barbara; three daughters, Andrea Dingler of Marietta, Ga., Judith Shankman of Long Beach, and Carol Wilson of Santa Barbara; and three grandchildren.
“Cremation will be handled by Welch-Ryce-Halder Mortuary with inurnment to follow at the Santa Barbara Cemetery chapel.”
