Correspondence. Lowell, Gerald to Great Great Aunt Helen Bates Thompson. 14 Jul 1975.
Jerry was quite close to his Aunt Helen and had started writing to her very regularly when he was in the 6th grade. She lived on Camano Island in Puget Sound, Washington, about an hour and a half drive north of Seattle, where Jerry attended graduate school and worked from 1973 to 1979. A number of issues arose between Helen and her husband, Hansell, and Jerry regarding lifestyle, career, and other choices. Jerry finally wrote this letter, which in later years, Helen would describe as something that she would read when she felt too good about herself. Jerry's grandmother, Hazel, niece to Helen, finally destroyed the letter without Helen's knowledge, because she was so tired hearing Helen talk about the letter.

Professor Kaukis taught Russian language and literature at Gustavus Adolphus College, St. Peter, Minnesota, when Jerry was an undergraduate student there. In Summer 1970, he received an NDFL (National Defense Foreign Language) fellowship to study Russian at Ohio State University. Jerry had written Professor Kaukis from OSU and she responded with this note: July 25, 1970, Dear Jerry, I was very happy to receive your letter. It is written so well that soon you will teach me Russian language, and not me teaching you. I am happy that you have such good and pleasant teachers. Summer is passing so soon and I still have not taken a rest, but I am hoping in August to spend 2-3 weeks at the lake in our cabin. The death, most likely suicide, of Bob Jackson was a shock to all of us. For some time, he seemed to be feeling better. The address for Mrs. Jackson... I wish you all the best, Yours, Alla Kaukis.

Correspondence. Lowell, Gerald R. Postcard of the Yuryev Monastery to Gudrun Nelson.
Sent from the Soviet Union in January 1968, while Gerald was on a month-long study trip. Message: Dear Grandma, This is a beautiful ancient monastery which we visited this morning in Novgorod, one-time capital of U.S.S.R. [Ed. note: Novgorod was never the capital of the U.S.S.R.] Quite different looking, however, in the wintertime, with snow everywhere. Has been very cold or "ochen kholodno" as a Russian would say. Am enjoying the tour very much. The rest of the students are great and very friendly--it's like we were all brothers & sisters nearly. We're at Leningrad tonite--tomorrow we take the train to Kiev, where hopefully it won't be quite so cold. Until later, love, Jerry.

Till later, Love, Jerry
