The third son of Thomas Holland, 1st Earl of Kent and Joan of Kent, he was a half-brother to King Richard II, and he remained strongly loyal to him. He was most likely involved in the downfall of Richard's uncle, Thomas of Woodstock, Duke of Gloucester, and he would not swear loyalty to the usurper Bolingbroke (Henry IV), instead conspiring against him to overthrow him and replace Richard on the throne. Needless to say, it failed.”
