1930 Census: recorded at home of mother, Mary D. Carls, living in Long Beach, California.
Minnehaha County death record states birthdate as Sept. 17, 1893 and death date as March 19, 1974. SSN as 386-01-6351. Death rec. lists father as W. F. Carls and mother as Maria Volsch. Buried in Hartford Cemetery 3-23-1974. Death from prostate cancer.
From the “Hartford Herald” Thursday, January 2, 1919:
“John Carls and Minnie Willig were married in Sioux Falls last week. These young people are well known and highly respected in Hartford and vicinity and need no introduction. The bride is the youngest daughter of Mr. and Ms. Phillip Willig and has been employed at the Bee Hive in Sioux Falls since graduating from high school here last spring. The groom is a well-to-do young farmer living south of town. Mr. and Mrs. Carls have the well-wishes of a host of friends.”

“John Carls’ rites Saturday
“Funeral services were held Saturday, March 23 in Sioux Falls for John W. Carls, 80, who died in a Sioux Falls hospital March 18. The Rev. Raymond Arveson conducted the service. Burial took place in Hartford Community cemetery. Pallbearers were Maynard Dubbe, C. P. Dunn, Duane Carls, Willard Kleist, George Lowell and Albert Haak.
“John Carls was born Sept. 17, 1893 in Hartford. He married Minnie Willig on Dec. 25, 1918 in Sioux Falls. They moved to California in 1942 and to Pontiac, Mich., prior to returning to Hartford in 1959. He was a machinist for Fischer Body Co.
“He is survived by his widow and a sister Lillian L. Carls, who lives in Long Beach, Calif.”
