Obituary
“Ernest Stangohr, 87, Howard, died Thursday, July 2 at Evergreen Health Center in Madison. Funeral services were held Sunday, July 5, 1992 at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Howard, with Rev. Juraine Hornig officiating.
Ernest Friedrich Heinrich Stangohr was born on a farm, February 12, 1905, in Lake County, SD, the tenth of thirteen children to German immigrants Wilhelm and Caroline (Voelsch) Stangohr. Ernest was baptized in the German Lutheran faith on April 22, 1905 and confirmed at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Howard on July 2, 1922. His confirmation Bible verse was Psalms 100:2. Hattie Backes was a member of his confirmation class.
He married Hattie Backes on December 14, 1927 at St. John’s in Howard. They celebrated their 64th wedding anniversay last year. Three children were born to Ernest and Hattie: Ruth Lois, Roy Ernest and Donald William. Ernie farmed with his family near Howard all of his life. They moved to Howard in 1984.
Ernie was a gifted storyteller, relating tales of local and family history to four generations of listeners. He instilled in his family a love for hunting, fishing and collecting antiques, coins and Indian artifacts.
Survivors include his wife, Hattie; son and daughter-in-law, Roy and Leona and son Donald all of Howard; son-in-law, Stanley Cross of Sioux Falls; sister, Vera Patro of Howard; thirteen grandchildren; thirty-one great grandchildren and a host of relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Ruth Cross; daughter-in-law, Deniece Stangohr; six sisters and five brothers.
Music was provided by Karen Moschell, organist, and Curtis and Thelma Hueners, vocalists.
Casketbearers were Raymond Cross, Brad Stangohr, Terry Stangohr, David Cross, Gary Stangohr, and Ryan Miller.
Honorary Pallbearers were Earl Voeltz, Duane Noonan, Donald Kaufman, Leo Kommes, Donald Laudner, Martin Esser, and Vincent Protsch.
Interment was at St. John’s Cemetery, Howard.”
