“Obituary of Mrs. Caroline Stangohr:
“Caroline Marie Dorothea Voelsch was born February 16, 1867 in Mecklenburg, Schuerin, Germany, to Joseph and Marie Voelsch.
“She was baptized February 24, 1867 in the Lutheran faith and renewed her baptismal vows fourteen years later by the rite of confirmation. In 1885 she came with her parents, five sisters and one brother to America, making her home near Hartford, S.D.
“On November 4, 1887 she was united in marrigae to Wilhelm Stangohr. They made their home for several years near Sioux Falls where their two eldest children were born. In 1892 the family removed to their homestead seven miles east of Canovaa. In 1919 she moved with her husband and family to their farm north of Canova, which remained her home until 1929 when she returned to her former homestead. It was at Canova that her husband passed away April 19, 1925. Her daughter Mary, died on Mary 24, 1924. Three sisters and one brother also preceded her in death.
“During the past years she had shared her home with her son, Albert Stangohr, her daughter, Mrs. Ernest Knisley and her grandson, Clarence Stangohr, whom she reared and lovingly cared for since his early childhood.
“Three years ago she became critically ill but miraculously recovered. Her failing eyesight caused her much trouble but she bore her affliction without complaint.
“Since early pioneer days she has been a most faithful member of St. John’s Lutheran Church of this city and helped with others of her faith to increase her fold and erect the beautiful church edifice in Howard where she worshipped at divine services the last Sunday of her life.
“She leaves to mourn her passing twelve children: Mrs. Fred Weld, of Salem, Mrs. James Schwader, of Howard; L. W. and Joe Stangohr of Winfred, Fred and Frank Stangohr of Chancellor, S.D.; Mrs. Frank Seuberling of Canova, Mrs. Wm. Moschell of Roswell, Ernest Stangohr of Hward, Mrs. Franklin Pamperin of Winfred, and Albert and Clarence Stangohr and Mrs. Ernest Knisley, at home.
“Thirty-three grandchildren, two sisters, Mrs. John Lowell of Sioux Falls, and Mrs. Mary Carls of Long Beach, Calif., one brother Louis Voelsch of Hartford and other countless relatives and friends mourn her sudden and unexpected death.
“Early Tuesday morning she was taken ill. An emergency operation was advised in an effort to save her life, whereupon she was rushed to the Huron hospital where the serious operation was performed; but all that surgical science, medical aid and loving assistance and care could do were to no avail. Her daughter, Mrs. James Schwader, was at her bedside when she passed to her reward, peacefully and apparently with no pain, safely into the eternal arms of her Saviour, on July 1, 1937, at the age of 70 years, 4 months, and twelve days.--Contributed.
“Funeral services were conducted by Rev. Walter Nitschke last Saturday afternoon at 2:00 at the Tuttle funeral home in Howard and at 2:30 at St. John’s Lutheran church in this city. Interment was made in the Canova cemetery beside the husband who preceded her in death.
“Relatives from away who attended the funeral were as follows: Mr. and Mrs. John Lowell, sr., Jr. and Mrs. John Lowell, jr., George Lowell, of Sioux Falls; Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Dahse, Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Jordan, Clarence Dahse, Mr. and Mrs. Lew Dubbe, Hartford, S. D., Lewis Voelsch, Wall Lake, Ruth and Wilma Weld, Yankton.”
