      “Lewis B. Peterson was born in 1830, the son of George and Eunice Peterson and brother of Rufus. He lived with his parents in Kingfield in 1850. He enlisted from Freeman in Battery 4, 1st Maine Light Artillery, on December 22, 1863, and was discharged on May 22, 1865. He may be the man who was a prisoner at the Maine State Prison in Thomaston in 1880. He applied for a pension in 1883 and is listed in Kingfield on the 1890 Veterans Schedule. He died in 1898, and his wife Cynthia applied for a pension in that year. He is buried in the West Kingfield Burial Ground with his parents and brother. His wife is buried in Riverside Cemetery in Kingfield.”

      “342. Lewis B. PETERSON was born in 1830 in Kingfield, Franklin County, Maine. He was buried in 1898 at West Kingfield (Durrell) Cemetery in Kingfield, Franklin County, Maine.
      In the transcription listing ( http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~mefrankl/wkingcem.htm - 2012 ) it indicates "(Civil War)" and "(Husband)" but as of January 2012 there is no record of a wife buried there. See also findagrave.com for this cemetery. He died on 7 November 1898 at the age of 68 in Freeman, Franklin County, Maine.
      Maine Death Records 1617 - 1922, No Record Number. Cause of death unknown; found dead in the woods.
      On 5 June 1860, in the 1860 Census, Lewis [indexed Petersen] and Mary Jane are living in the residence of Elijah E. Gammon in Weld, Franklin County, Maine.
      From the Civil War Soldier Records and Profiles, Lewis from Freeman, Maine into the Maine 4th Light Artillery Battery and mustered out on 22 May 1865. At the time of enlistment he resided in Kingfield, Franklin County, Maine (U.S., Civil War Draft Registrations Records, 1863-1865).
      In the 1870 Census, Lewis and Mary Jane and family are in Kingfield, Franklin County, Maine.
      Some research might indicate that Lewis B. is in the 1880 Census as a prisoner in the Maine State Prison at Thomaston, Knox County, Maine. While another Lewis Peterson cannot be found in the census, it should be noted that the prisoner Lewis is listed as single, being born in 1836, and father born in Massachusetts with mother born in Vermont.
      In 1883 Lewis B. Peterson is receiving an invalid pension, Application Number 495905, Certificate Number 477547. The pension record indicates he served "D-1 Maine L A"
      On 28 December 1898 Cynthia J. Peterson is receiving a widow's pension on the record of Lewis B. Peterson, Application Number 689304, Certificate Number 532279.

      “Lewis B. PETERSON and Mary Jane GAMMON were married on 6 May 1860 in Franklin County, Maine. Mary Jane GAMMON, daughter of Elijah Elder GAMMON and Hannah DUTTON, was born on 29 August 1825 in Weld, Franklin County, Maine. She died on 19 November 1892 at the age of 67.
      There is a record that Mary Jane's death is 19 November 1892; however, this writer believes it to be before September 1879 at which time an opinion written by the Maine Supreme Court, regarding a motion filed by Lewis B. Peterson, includes reference that Lewis's wife, Mary Jane Gammon, had died before Lewis Peterson's original court trial.
      In the 1850 Census she is living with her parents and family in Weld, Franklin County, Maine.

      Lewis B. PETERSON and Mary Jane GAMMON had the following children:

      i. Etta (Mary, Rosetta) PETERSON.
      ii. Roscoe Lewis PETERSON.

      Lewis B. PETERSON and Cynthia J. BLAKE were married. Cynthia J. BLAKE, daughter of Nehemiah BLAKE and Nancy LAWRENCE, was born about 1838 in Willington, Piscataquis County, Maine.
      Maine Death Records, 1617-1922, No Record Number. She was buried in November 1913 at Riverside Cemetery in Kingfield, Franklin County, Maine. She died on 19 November 1913 at the age of 75 in Lexington, Somerset County, Maine.

      In the 1880 Census she is living in Kingfield, Franklin County, Maine with her husband Leonard Bourne and various children.
      In the 1910 Census she is living in Lexington Plantation, Somerset County, Maine with her step-son Roscoe Peterson and is listed as age 70 and that she had three children with one surviving.”

      Lewis B. Peterson was indicted and convicted for incest with his daughter. In the Portland Daily Press, Portland, Maine, Vol. 16, p. 3, Tuesday, March 18, 1879, the following item was noted under “Farmington News”: Farmington, March 17. In the S. J. Court, Thursday, Lewis B. Peterson of Freeman, plead not guilty. Verdict guilt.”
