Newspaper article: The Bangor Daily News (Bangor, Maine) 4 Mar 1908, Wed.:
“A short time ago we announced in this paper the death of Mrs. Miranda Couch in California. As then stated Mrs. Couch was a daughter of the late Simeon B. Lowell, Esq., of Minneapolis, Minn., formerly of Whitneyville, where both father and daughter taught school with marked success. We have since learned that she was the first woman elected to a principalship in the schools of Minneapolis, being put in on trial and proving a great success. An impressive service was recently held in that city, a large number of people being present to pay their last tribute, many of those in attendance having long known her. The Minneapolis Journal in a recent issue says:
‘A memorial service for Mrs. Wardwell-Couch was held in Wesley church yesterday afternoon, the pastor, Dr. S. M. Dick, presiding. Mrs. N. H. Winchell read a brief memorial sketch:
‘Mrs. Couch was a native of Maine and the wife of Rev. Irving Wardwell who, enlisting as a private, later served as chaplain of the Twenty-eighth Maine and died in the service. The young widow came to Minneapolis and served thirteen years as principal of the Jefferson school, was married to George Couch of this city, and a few years ago removed to Los Angeles, where both she and her husband died. She was active in church and Sunday school work, having served as treasurer and president of the Minneapolis branch of the Women’s Foreign Misionary society of the church. She presided over the national council of that body at a recent session.
‘Dr. Jabez Brooks of the State University, who had known Mrs. Couch forty years, paid tribute to her force of character and practical usefulness. He illustrated her self-control and her power over others by her conduct at the fire which destroyed the old Jefferson school building which stood on the ground now occupied by the Hennepin Avenue church.
‘Mrs. S. A. Stockwell spoke of the deceased as an educator, declaring that she was ahead of her time in that she was accustomed to make careful diagnosis of the health, temperament and environment of every student who went wrong. Charles Drew also spoke of Mrs. Couch’s work for her pupils. Personal reminiscences were given by Edward M. Conant, George F. Wells, Mrs. J. H. Johnson, Miss May Brooks and Mrs. Garrigues. Musical numbers were rendered by Mrs. Ponteous and Mrs. Boutell.”
Mrs. Couch’s parents died in 1881. The writer has a notice under that year in his scap-book, clipped from one of the Machias papers, which reads as follows:
‘In Minneapolis, Minn., Mrs. M. A. S., wife of Simeon B. Lowell, Esq., aged 72 years; in Spencer Brook, Minn., May 10, Simeon B. Lowell, aged 75 years, both formerly of Whitneyville.”
