He was originally appointed fire warden in Wesley April 9, 1894, in charge of the third district which was all the land west of New Stream to the town line, Walker’s land. He ran the Hayward Hotel until 1903 when he sold it to John Perlie Hayward, his younger brother. Later, in the 1920s, he was a tower watchman.
