All deliveries were within walking distance as Sioux Falls was still a small town. In 1941, he was accepted into a civilian pilot training program. Thirty applied and only 10 were chosen. He received his private pilot's license and was sent to Cheyenne Wyoming, to further his training to become a commercial pilot and instructor.

Eva was a secretary and had no touble finding a job. Meanwhile, Carlyle was instructing for the U.S. Army Air Corps with Plains Airways. Carlyle also instructed at Spartan School of Aeronautics while training air corps cadets. Carlyle had to join the reserves to keep exempt from service. In order to become a commercial and air corps pilot, he had to complete the same courses he had been teaching. In 1946, he was called to the Philippines as a supply officer at a jet fighter base. He was discharged in May of 1947.
Eva and Carlyle made Englewood, CO, their home. Carlyle took auto body training at the Opportunity School in Denver. He was a mechanic for 40 years, 10 years for Ford Motors and the remainder of his career at a private garage. He retired in 1987. Eva retired as a secretary in 1985. Carlyle and Eva did not have any children. They bought a camper and enjoyed many fishing and camping trips. Carlyle joined the Rocky Mountain Thunder Bird Car Club.
He restored many T-birds and is a charter member. They belonged to and were active members of the Lutheran Church of Englewood. Following Paul's footsteps, they took a trip with their church group to Israel and Greece.
Carlyle and Eva moved to Emeritus July 23, 2012. Eva lives in our memory care community. They spend time with each other every day. Carlyle takes a long walk each morning. He is trying to join exercise more often as he feels it really helps him. He thinks the Emeritus staff is following through with care as promised. Carlyle thinks the landscaping on the premises is outstanding and adds to the "at home" feeling here. He thinks the caregiveres are very pleasant and helpful. Housekeeping is done to his satisfaction. He thinks the dining area is lovely and likes most menus. He thinks the dining staff is very nice and remembers his "likes." He has met a few residents and is looking forward to meeting more of you. Please find the time to stop and visit with Carlyle. You will find him to be most pleasant. Carlyle and Eva are looking forward to their 70th wedding anniversary Nov. 25!"
