"Winfield S. Gatchell
MONTPELIER. Dec. 8. Winfield Scott Gatchell. 81 years of age, died at his home, 57 Berlin street, Saturday afternoon following a short illness. He was born in Brunswick, Me., Feb. 20, 1859, the son of James H. and Margaret (MacLean) Gatchell. He was married to Miss Josephine Vance of Masstown, N.S. and she died in January 1936. Mr. Gatchell learned the blacksmith's trade in the shipbuilding yards of Bath, Me., and for the past 35 years he had been employed in the machine shops of the Mon ? and Wells River railroad in this city, where he was known by his fellow associates as an industrious, able and faithful worker. He is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Alice Steadman of Barre and Mrs. Rene Jeffrey of this city; several grandchildren, Mrs. Joseph Grenier, Mrs. Wilfred Soule, Mrs. Pearl Jones, Arthur Simmons, all of Barre, Mrs. Norman James of Montpelier, Ralph Simmons of Woodsville, N.H., two sisters, Mrs. Charles Hayward of Lowell, Mass., and Mrs. Elnora Stevens of San Francisco, Cal, and three great-grandchildren, Norman James, Jr. of Montpelier and Patricia and Shirley Simmons of Barre.
The funeral will be held Monday at the Willett Funeral Home, 118 Barre st., at 2 .m. with Rev. Gerald R. Fitzpatrick of the Church of the Messiah officiating. Burial will be at Berlin Corner."
Nme on headstone reads: Winfield Scott (last name may be on other side of headstone. Headstone also has names "Josephine Mildred Vance 1869-1936 and Irene Vance Jeffrey 1898-1969.
