Two-Alarm Blaze Causes Loss of $10,000
Family Attending Grid Reception at Time- Cat Rescued
Two alarms were sounded for a $10,000 fire which spread through the two and a half story building at 67 Pearl St., East Somerville, the home of Mr. and Mrs. Herman A. Toothaker, last night. The sons and a brother, Charles W. Toothaker, make their home there, but no one was at home at the time of the fire. A little gray cat, "Peetie," was rescued by a neighbor.
The fire broke out in the cellar, apparently caused by an overheated furnace. The flames shot up through the house mushrooming through each floor and out through the roof, causing a spectacular fire that could be seen for miles around.
The fire was discovered by Culver ? of 60 Cross st., Somerville. William McAlpine of 41A Franklin st, nearby heard the meows of the cat, and rushed into the cellar and brought it to safety.
Chief Sewall M. Rich directed the work of the firemen, who were handicapped by the bitter cold weather.
Mr. Toothaker was in a hospital at the time of the fire and Mrs. Elizabeth Toothaker and her sons, H. Wesley, 22, and Gradon 19, were attending the reception to the Somerville High School football team. They were notified by telphone of the fire and hurried home."
