According to Mim, Sam Hershkowitz pretended that he had died, by putting up a gravestone with his own name on it rather than the name of the old man that had died, so that he could avoid being conscripted into the Russian army. He then escaped to England. (Sylvie had never heard this story.)
Sam Herkowitz would clean up the innards for use in kishka. According to Mim, he got fired as a tripeman because a button fell off his shirt and when he bent down to pick it up, he was accused of stealing. All of the slaughterhouse employees were Polish gentiles except for him. (Sylvie had never heard this story.)
After the slaughterhouse, Sam had a store on New Lotts Ave. but had to close the store during the depression. He then rented a pushcart by the day selling fruits and vegetables to make a living.
Sam became a U.S. citizen in 1923. Another piece of information indicates that Sam Hershkowitz was naturalized on 12/11/1924 and at that time his age was listed as 33, meaning that he was born in 1891.
