The 1920 census for Logan Township, Minnehaha County, indicates that Helga arrived in the U.S. in 1905 and that she (in 1920) was already a naturalized citizen. She, along with husband, Martin, and her two children, Kelfred and Evelyn, were living with her brother, Arthur Vik. Also living with Arthur Vik were Helga's brother, Kalmar, her sister, Rachel, and her cousin, Harold D. Nelson.

Evelyn recalled that she and Helga made two trips back to South Dakota, one in 1960, when Arthur drove, and one in 1965 when she and Helga visited.

Prior to their move to Seattle, Karen and Andrew had separated; Andrew went to Alberta, Canada and farmed. After WWII and before Norway began to benefit significantly from North Sea oil discoveries, Norwegian life was difficult.
