- Based on information in the church records for Harold Nelson's birth baptism and birth, spelling of father’s name is “Thore Nilsen.” Based on information in the church records for Harold Nelson's confirmation, spelling of father’s name is “Tore Nilsen.” Based on information about Harold Nelson in the 1900 Norwegian census, the spelling of his father’s name is Tor Nelsen. The name "Thore Nelson" appeared on Harold Nelson's application for bonus pay, which he completed himself, after serving in World War I. Gudrun Nelson had stated to her grandson, Gerald, that Harold's father's name was Nils Vik.
Harold's baptism record states that his father, Thore, was a fisherman from Bodo. According to church records, Harold was an illegitimate child; his father was not present at his christening.
The spelling of the name used here is the form used in the bygdebok published by the Andøy kommune.
There are a number of different individuals that can be found in various Norwegian records who could be Harold Nelson’s birth father. At this point, given the information that is available, it is impossible to identify correctly which specific Tor or Thore Nilsen might actually be his father. Several different individuals are being investigated to see if it is possibe to identify this individual. One individual from Vardø, Finnmark, Norway is being researched. His ID number is 17409. Another individual from Hillesøy, Troms, Norway is also being researched. His ID number is 20087. A third individual, ID number 21861, is also a possibility. Obviously, all of this research assumes that the information recorded for Harold's father as listed in the parish records is correct, which sadly, is unable to be substantiated at this time.
