“Attorney L. Mifflin Ward dies at 74”
L. Mifflin Ward, 74, a member of a pioneer San Diego family and a well-known attorney, died Friday after a lengthy hospitalization at the Georgian Court Convalescent Hospital.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church.
Mr. Ward was a native of San Diego and both sides of his family were direct descendants of Pilgrims who came over on the Mayflower.
His grandfathers, William Mifflin Smith of Pennsylvania and Iowa state Sen. Martin Luther Ward, settled in San Diego in the late 1800s. Sen. Ward started a law firm in San Diego in 1889. When Mr. Ward’s father, John McCartney Ward, joined the firm in the early 1900s it became Ward & Ward.
After Mr. Ward graduated from Stanford Law School in 1938 he also joined the firm, known today as Ward, Thorn & Jessop.
From 1941-1946 Mr. Ward served as an officer in the Army Field Artillery. He continued to serve in the Army Reserve in San Diego and retired in 1973 as a lieutenant colonel.
A communicant of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, Mr. Ward was a former president of the Boy’s Club of San Diego and active in many organizations, including the Committee of 100, Toastmasters International, University Club of San Diego, Cotillion Club of San Diego, Rest and Aspiration Society of San Diego, Scottish Rite bodies, San Diego Museum of Art, Retired Officers Association, Point Loma Rotary Club, San Diego Historical Society, San Diego Symphony Association, San Diego Opera Association and Zoological Society of San Diego.
He was a 32nd degree Mason of San Diego Lodge 35 and a member of the Al Bahr Shrine. He was affiliated with the American, California and San Diego Bar associations.
Mr. Ward is survived by his wife, Mary, and a daughter, Mary, both of San Diego; a son, Robert of San Francisco, and two stepsons, Randall Batley of San Diego and William Batley of Austin, Texas; and two brothers, Philip of Point Loma and Jack of Downey.
The family has suggested memorial contributions to the Alzheimer’s Disease Association, PO Box 99037, San Diego 92109, or to other charities.”
