    Owen McNiff Jr.
    Amherst-Owen Augustine McNiff Jr., 81, of Greenleaves Drive, formerly of Hadley and Suffield, Conn., died Wednesday at SunBridge in Hadley. He was born in Ayer on Aug. 25, 1925, the son of the late Helen Marie (Furbush) and Owen A. McNiff Sr.
    Owen was married to Helen Margaret Logan in the First Congregational Church in Hadley on April 23, 1949, and was a 1943 graduate of Hopkins Academy.
    Throughout his life, Owen was a dedicated farmer who loved the land and the view from the tractor.
    He had been the manager and owner of McNiff Farms in Hadley and Whately, worked for Consolidated Cigar, and recently retired from Baker Nurseries in West Suffield.
    His hobbies included gardening, forecasting the weather, analyzing the news, politics and the Red Sox, keeping a daily journal, and reading.
    He loved family gatherings, all aircraft, vacationing at Daytona Beach and Disney World, watching space shuttle takeoffs and landings at Cape Canaveral, and the family cottage in Hinsdale. Owen was especially proud of his conservation award-winning farming, his pilot’s license, and for having flown a P-51 Mustang “Crazy Horse” in Florida last year.
    He leaves his beloved children, Katherine (Kitty) McNiff James and her husband, Peter James, of South Deerfield, CW4 Ret. Owen A. McNiff III and his wife, Eun Jeong, of Round Hill, Va., and Amy S. McNiff of South Windsor, Conn. His son, Master Sgt. Patrick C. McNiff, USAF, predeceased him in 2001.
    Owen was a proud grandfather of Garrett James of Santa Cruz, Calif., Griffin James, of Cambridge, Courtney Manning and Shea Manning, of South Windsor, Sean Patrick McNiff, of East Windsor, Conn., Paul McNiff and his wife, Jin, of Pyeongtek, South Korea, and their daughter, Sara Jin. He also leaves his daughter-in-law, Katherine Ripley McNiff, his son-in-law, Timothy Manning, and his wonderful nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family.
    Owen was predeceased by his brothers, Walter F. McNiff, of California, Col. Frank L. McNiff, USAF, of Texas; his sister, Helen Lorraine Bailey, of Florida; his cousins, Henry “Buzz” McNiff, of Sedona, Ariz., and John (Jack) O’Connell, of Westford, whom he thought of as brothers.
    Funeral services for Owen have been entrusted to Wrisley Funeral Home, 90 Sugarloaf St., South Deerfield.
    Calling hours will be on Thursday, Jan. 11, from 6 to 8 p.m. A service celebrating his life will be at the First Congregational Church, Middle Street, Hadley, on Friday, Jan. 12, at 10 a.m., with a reception for friends and family at the church following the service.
    Burial will be in West Suffield. Cards of condolence may be sent to Helen L. McNiff, The Suffield House, 1 Canal Road, Suffield, CT 06078.
    Memorial contributions may be sent to the Blood Bank, Cooley Dickinson Hospital, P.O. Box 329, Northampton, MA 01060-0329, whose caring staff enriched Owen’s life during treatment for his illness.”

    Helen Margaret Logan McNiff, 85, of Suffield, CT, formerly of Hadley, MA, died at The Suffield House on June 11, 2014, where she had lived since 2005. Helen was born August 12, 1928 in Springfield, MA, the daughter of the late A. Louise Pomeroy and Joseph A. Logan, Sr. She was married to her beloved husband Owen A. McNiff, Jr. on April 23, 1949 at the First Congregational Church in Hadley, MA. Helen graduated with the Class of 1945 from Hopkins Academy, Hadley, MA at the age of sixtgeen.
    She attended the University of Massachusetts and graduated from Bay Path College with honors in 1948. She began her career as a medical secretary at the Tucson Medical Center in Arizona. Stricken with polio in 1953 while on vacation in Washington, DC, Helen waged a brave, life-long, uncomplaining battle with the residual physical limitations. She returned to work in later years as a legal secretary for Attorney Peter James in Greenfield, MA and then as a medical secretary at Andersen/CDI in Connecticut prior to retiring in 1993.
    She loved traveling with her husband, fishing from her canoe at their cottage in Hinsdale, MA, the beaches of Florida, watching space shuttle launches and Disney World. She will be remembered by all for her beautiful voice, love of music, her cooking, keen sense of humor, her gorgeous blue eyes and infinite resilience. Helen leaves her children Katherine (Kitty) McNiff James and her husband, Peter, South Deerfield, MA; CW4 Ret Owen A. McNiff, III and his wife Eun Jeong, Havre de Grace, MD; and Amy S. McNiff and her husband Mark Griffin, Vernon, CT. She was predeceased by her loving husband Owen in 2007 and their son Master Sgt. USAF Patrick C. McNiff in 2001.

    "Frank L. Furbush
    The funeral of Frank L. Furbush, an executive of the C. G. Sargent Sons Corp., of Graniteville, with whom he had been associated for 57 years, took place from his home in Broadway street, Graniteville at 2 o'clock yesterday afternoon. The C. G. Sargent Sons Corp. was represented by Allen C. Sargent, president, and Mrs. Henry Hildreth, treasurer; the Abbot Worsted Co., by Edward M. Abbot, president; the H. E. Fletcher Granite Co., by Arthur Mallean; the L. P. Palmer Co., by Mark A. Palmer; the E. Frank Lewis Co., of Lawrence by Mr. Lewis; the Hudson Worsted Co., by Mr. Dyson; the Gilet Carbonizing Co. of Lowell, by Mr. Gilet.
    The town of Westford where Mr. Furbush had held public office for many years was represented by the following: Selectman Arthur L. Healy, Tax Collector Edward F. Harrington, Auditor Harold W. Hildreth, Moderator Roger H. Hildreth, Fire Engineer Richard Hall; school board, Edward. C. Buckingham; finance committee, William E. Wright; board of health, Curt H. Sargent Sons Corp was closed all of yesteray afternoon as a mark of respect for Mr. Furbush and to enable all of the employees to attend the services. The American flag was flown at half staff from the liberty pole at Westford common yesterday in honor of Mr. Furbush, a past officer of the town.
    There was a large display of flowers. The honorary bearers were William R. Taylor, Oscar R. Spalding, Arthur Nystrom, and Frank Haley. The active bearers were P. Henry Harrington, Elmar N. Christenson, Albert G. Forly, Isane L. Hall, Stanley Smith and Ferdinand J. LeDuc. Burial took place in the family lot in Fairiew cemetery in Westford, where the committal prayers were offered by Rev. Mr. Preston and Rev. U. H. Layton. Traffic at the home and cemetery was directed by Chief John F. Sullivan of the Westford police department. Arrangements were in the charge of Funeral Directors David L. Greig & Son."

    “FRANK L. FURBUSH
    Frank L. Furbush, a widely known resident of Graniteville, died at his home in Broadway street, Graniteville, Sunday after a brief illness. He had been a resident of Graniteville for more than 60 years and was born in Freeman, Me., April 3, 1861. A few years after taking up his residence in Graniteville, he became associated with C. G. Sargent Sons Corp., and rose rapidly with this firm, where he had been employed for 57 years, holding the positions of consulting engineer at the time of his death. Mr. Furbush and Miss Margaret C. Murphy were united in marriage on Jan. 15, 1885, and celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary by a family gathering on last January. He leaves his wife, Mrs. Margaret C. Furbush; a daughter, Mrs. Owen A. McNiff of Hadley; two sons, F. Russell Furbush and William Carroll Furbush, both of Graniteville, and six grandchildren. He had served as selectman for 12 years, on board of health for eight years, the school board for 12 years, and was a member of the Westford finance board for several years having resigned from that board more than a year ago.”

Furbush, Just one of the Graniteville Notables you’ll hear about in our upcoming Walking Tour of the heart of Graniteville. WESTFORD, March 8, 1938 (Lowell Sun)-Citizens of Westford will regret to learn that Frank L. Furbush, who has served in several important elective offices for many years, declined reappointment to the finance board at the expiration of his term on March 1 of this year because of his health. Mr Furbush was born in Freeman Maine on April 1, 1861. He received his education in the school of that town and in 1883 came to Graniteville where he entered the employ of the C.G.Sargent Corp., for whom he has worked for 55 years and at the present time is their chief engineer.
    Mr. Furbush was a member of the board of selectmen for 12 years and chairman for six year. He served 12 years also on the school committee, was a fire engineer for six years and chairman of the board of health during the period he was selectman. For the past 10 years he has been a wise valued member of the finance board. Mr. Furbursh has been a wised and trustworthy executive whose objectives has always been in the best interest of Westford
    Mr Hildreth has sent the following letter to Mr. Furbush:
    My Dear Mr. Furbush;
    It was with regret that I learned that you felt unable to continue your duties on the finance board. Your presence on the school committee, board of health and board of selectmen over a long period contributed in a large measure to a wise and economical administration of town affairs. In acknowledgement of your experience and good judgement you were appointed in 1928 to the finance board on which you served faithfully and gave willingly of your time during the past ten years.
    On behalf of the people of Westford, I wish to express their sincere appreciation of your unselfish service.
