Portions of a Letter from Rex Leubecher to Jerry Lowell, postmarked Jan 10, 2003:
“..Aunt Bertha and Uncle John moved to Oklahoma City from St. Cloud. My folks were married in September of 1914 and visited them in Oklahoma on their honeymoon. Uncle John had been involved in the printing business. He had made the largest book cover out of leather at the time. It was displayed at a World’s Fair. I don’t remember the city but was about in the 1890s or early 1900s. Years back it was displayed at the Pierre Museum, maybe still there. We, our family, went to visit them in either 1929 or 1930. At that time Uncle John was a “jobber”. He would solicit orders and take to printers to be made. Bertha and John lived in 1/2 of a duplex and Rene and husband Nesbitt Miller lived in the other half. I remember they had a connecting door to each side. Later, after our trip, Neb & Rene adopted two girls. Neb had served in the Army and in Oklahoma City was a Doctor optometrist. We have kept in touch with Sherri, one of the adopted daughters of Rene & Neb.

      Address:
      Sherri and Marion Butterfield
      25626 Mosquero Lane
      Mission Viejo, California 92675

Sherri & Marion have two married daughters and two grandchildren. We have lost track of Mitzi but suppose Sherri would know where she might be.
Aunt Bertha and Uncle John did have one other daughter--Vera. Vera died at a very young age and don’t know any details. In retirement, Aunt Bertha and Uncle John would drive around in the late afternoons. On their last drive together, Uncle John missed the final turn home and asked Aunt Bertha where is our street? Laid his head on the steering wheel and died. Bertha managed to stop the car...Bertha died very similarly. Later after John’s death, Bertha and friends would take trips occasionally. Their last trip was to Carlsbad Caverns. Bertha didn’t arise in the morning in a motel and passed away in her sleep.”

From The Oklahoman newspaper, Jan. 17, 1938: Funeral for John Hommes, 73, 949 East Drive, who was in the printing and engraving business here 32 years, will be conducted at 4 p.m. Monday in the Watts & McAtee Funeral Home. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery. Hommes died Saturday in the 600 block NE 11th Street while he was going home."

Obituary: St. Cloud Times (Saint Cloud, Minnesota) 17 Jan 1938, Mon.
      "John Hommes
John Hommes died suddenly Sunday morning at his home in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, from heart attack, at the age of 71.
He was owner and manager of a printing plant and had been in good health until the day of his death.
He will be remembered by older St. Cloud residents. He established a book bindery in this city in about 1892, and a couple of years later it was purchased by The Journal-Press company, and he was its superintendent for some years, until he decided to go into business for himself in a western city, finally locating in Oklahoma. He was one of the first men to own an automobile in St. Cloud. He is survived by Mrs. Hommes and a daughter."

Obituary: Sooner State Press (Norman, Oklahoma) 22 Jan 1938, Sat.

John Hommes, 73 years old, who had been in the printing and engraving business in Oklahoma City since 1906, died of heart disease January 15 while driving home with his wife from a shopping trip.
Mrs. Hommes seized the wheel and stopped the automobile, when Hommes suddenly slumped back in his seat, dead.
Born in 1865 in Minneapolis, Hommes engaged in business in Minnesota several years before going to Oklahoma City in 1906. He was a partner in the printing and bookbinding firm of Hommes-Wilson-Trave, Inc. Later he established the Fine Arts Engraving company.
