Vera Patro:
Howard, SD--Vera Marie Patro, 90, died Sunday, Feb. 27, 2000, at the Good Samaritan Center in Howard, S.D.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at St. John’s Lutheran Church. Burial will be in St. John’s Cemetery in Howard.
Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., with the family present from 7 to 9 p.m., Wednesday at Willoughby Funeral Home in Howard.
Mrs. Patro was born on Aug. 25, 1909, to Wilhelm and Caroline (Volsch) Stangohr. She attended school in Lake County, S.D., and later in Canova.
She married Ernest Knisley on Oct. 21, 1932, at Pipestone, Minn. They farmed south of Winfred until 1950. She raised a large garden and sold apples from their orchard. She moved to Wahoo in 1950 and worked in the nursing department of the Saunders County Hospital for 23 years.
She married Carl Patro on April 21, 1962 in Wahoo. After retiring in 1974, the Patros bought an acreage north of Howard, where they lived. She again raised a garden and returned to canning and preserving foods. They raised a few animals and enjoyed life in the country until Mr. Patro’s health failed. Mrs. Patro moved into Sunrise Terrace Apartments in Howard in 1991.
She was a member of Stl. John’s Lutheran Church.
Her hobbies included gardening and sewing. In Wahoo, she had been a member of the Wahoo Women’s Club for more than 20 years, served two terms as chairwoman of the Grace Luteran LCW and served as noble grand of the Rebekah Lodge in 1962 and 1970. In Howard, she was active in Bible study groups, Ladies Aid, senior citizens activities and 60-plus dinners.
Survivors include two daughters, Peggy (Mrs. Donald) Miller of Chapman and Joy (Mrs. Larry) Glor of Rosemount, Minn; four grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by six brothers, William, Joseph, Fred, Albert, Ernest and Frank, and six sisters, Minnie, Meta, Frieda, Mary, Alma, and Ida.
