    Notes
    • Birth Record: Church Book: Bjørnskinn 1887-1908:
      Birthdate: 5 May 1901
      Birthplace: Bjørnskinn
      Baptism date: 23 Jun 1901
      Name: Bjarne
Parents: Firnbamarb. Johan Helmer Alexander Edvardsen Smedvik, born in 1873, og h. Hilda Josefine Hansdtr., born in 1880
Witnesses: Nils Olsen med h., Simon Hansen med do. Bernhard Hansen, alle fra Bjørnskinn.

Evelyn Johnson believed that he drowned in Alaska.

Moved to Canada in 1920 at age 19, per Susan Woster. Susan indicated that Bjarne "worked on boats, and had applied for U.S. citizenship. He had settled in Washington where he had a fiancée/sweetheart. He died in Anchorage, Alaska in 1930 when he was washed off a pier or overboard."

In an email dated September 23, 2011, Susan Woster supplied the following information:
“Okay, I think I've finally found a missing puzzle piece. As you probably know, my Mom's father Eilif had an older brother named Bjarne. I'd always heard that he'd been washed off a wharf or ship deck in Alaska. But that's all I knew. I think that the only thing my mother knew for sure was that he had died before she was born, and that her father had his fountain pen.

      I just found this link:

      http://files.usgwarchives.net/ak/anchorage/cemeteries/amp/aamem21.txt

      Which lists a "Ben Smevik"...

I've found more than one document where Bjarne has listed himself as Ben, so I'm 90% sure that this record is for him. I'll add the disclaimer to my notes, but I did think it was pretty exciting to have a death date and a burial date. Now maybybe I can write to the State of Alaska to see if I can get more info (but Alaska is really weird about giving out info, so it may not be that easy... maybe they're afraid because they can see Russia...). In addition, I have relatives (my father's step family) who might be able to go to the cemetery and look up the grave. Or maybe I'll go there next time I go up to Alaska to visit my stepmother.” [1]
