OBITUARY:
“MRS. ELLA WARD EXPIRES IN SLEEP”
“Heart Attack Fatal to Wife of Former State Senator; Funeral to be Tomorrow”
“Stricken with a heart attack while she slept, Mrs. Ella B. Ward, widow of M. L. Ward, former state senator, died at her home, 1030 Twenty-third street, Tuesday night.
“Mrs. Ward had been a resident of San Diego county since 1887 and with her husband, who was exceedingly active in civic affairs here years ago, was well known by many San Diegans. She had not been well since the death of her husband, May 6, 1930, and a few months ago suffered another shock when her grandson, Ward Edmonds, famous Stanford University athlete, died from infantile paralysis.
“Mrs. Ward was found dead in her bed yesterday morning when her housekeeper went to her room to summon her employer. Living with Mrs. Ward in the family home was one of her sons, Paul Ward.
“Born in Vinton, Ia., Mrs. Ward moved to Chula Vista in 1887. Later she and her husband moved to the Twenty-third street address, where Mrs. Ward had lived for 25 years. She was born Jan. 20, 1856.
“The deceased’s body was taken to Johnson-Saum mortuary. Funeral services will be held tomorrow morning at 10 o’clock. The Rev. Roy Campbell will officiate. Burial will be at the family plot at Mt. Hope cemetery. She was an active member of the First Congregational church.
“Mrs. Ward is survived by three sons, M. L. Ward, jr., Paul Ward and John M. Ward, a daughter, Mrs. Warner Edmunds, and eight grand-children. All are of San Diego with the exception of Mrs. Edmonds who resides in Santa Barbara. She and her husband will be here in time for the funeral tomorrow.”
