Nancy PETERSON

-
Name Nancy PETERSON Born 10 Jul 1817 Jay, Franklin, Maine, USA Gender Female Died Between 1861 and 1867 Notes - No actual vital records have been located to confirm the ancestry of Nancy Peterson. The name “Peterson” was not a common name in the 1800s in Maine. In the 1790 census, there are only two Peterson families recorded as living in Maine. In the census records for the first half of the 1800s, two different Peterson families are noted living in the appropriate areas: Charles Peterson and George Peterson. The dates for Charles Peterson’s marriage, the fact that he had 10 children with only 7 positively identified (Nancy would be one of the “unidentified”), the fact that he had a daughter who would match Nancy’s age, the fact that he lived in Freeman for the majority of his life, supports Charles Peterson as being the father of Nancy. George Peterson’s marriage date is four years after the birth of Nancy, the census records do not reflect that he had a daughter corresponding to the age of Nancy, and the fact that he lived for the majority of his life in Kingfield seems to rule him out as the father of Nancy.
Absent actual vital records, positive confirmation can be made that Charles Peterson is the father of Nancy from two different source documents, both in the possession of Gerald Lowell. The first is a Christmas Card from Frank and Maggie Furbish to Viola Lowell, in which he states “I was down in Farmington last fall and saw what is left. I went and made a call on Aunt Vesta. I think she told me that she was 92 years old. She was quite smart.” The second is a picture and note, enclosed in a Christmas card from 1931, again sent from Frank Furbish to Viola Furbish Lowell. The note states: “I am sending you two snap shots--one myself taken on the steps of the school house at Freeman Center about 1/2 mile from Grandfather Peterson’s home...”
In the Wednesday, May 16, 1838 edition of the Age newspaper (Augusta, ME), there is a notice for a "Nancy H. Furbush" indicating that a letter was waiting to be picked up at the Post Office, Augusta, Maine. This is the first reference encountered where there is a middle initial stated. Do not know if this "Nancy H. Furbush" is the same as this "Nancy Peterson Furbush."
Marriage record for youngest son, Frank L. Furbush lists parents as "A. & Fanny Furbush."
