Before me, the undersigned, Clerk of the District Court in and for said County, personally appeared Jochim Volsch a native of Germany and makes solemn oath that it is bona fide his intention to become a citizen of the United States, to renounce and abjure forever all allegiance and fidelity to every foreign power, prince, potentate, state or sovereignty whatsoever, and particularly allegiance to William, Emperor of Gemany of whom he was heretofore a subject, and that he will support the constitution and government of the United States. [signed Jochim Volsch (not his signature)] Sworn to and subscribed before me this 15th day of February 1887. Cyrus Walts, Clerk of the district court.

      Be it Remembered, that on the 12 day of Dec. in the year of Our Lord one thousand eight hundred and ninety two personally appeared before the Honorable E. Rasmussen Presiding Judge of the county Court of Minnehaha County, aforesaid Jochim Volscch an alien born and native of Germany above the age of twenty-one years, and applied in open court to be admitted to become a naturalized citizen of the United States of America, pursuant to the several acts of Congress heretofore passed on thahat subject. And the said Jochim Volsch having thereupon produced to the Court record testimony showing that he had heretofore reported himself and filed his declaration of his intention to become a citizen of the United States, according to the provisions of said several acts of Congress, and the Court being satisfied, as well from the oath of the said Jochim Volsch as from the testimony of Henry Philipp and Herman Philipp who are known to be citizens of the United States, that the said Jochim Volsch has resided within the limits and under the Jurisdiction of the United States for at least five years last past, and at least one year last past within the State of South Dakota, and that during the whole of that time he has behaved himself as a man of good moral character, attached to the principles contained in the Constitution of the United States, and well disposed to the good order, well being and happiness of the same; and two years and upwards having elapsed sisince the said Jochim Volsch reported himself and filed his declaration of intention as aforesaid, IT WAS ORDERED that the said Jochim Volsch be permitted to take the oath to support the Consitution of the United States and the usual oath whereby he renounced all allegiance and fidelity to every foreign Prince, Potentate, State, or Sovereignty whatever and more particularly to Emperor of Germany whereof he was heretofore a subject, which said oath having been administered to the said JJochim Volsch by the Clerk of said Court, it was ordered by the Court that the said Jochim Volsch be admitted to all and singular the rights, privileges and immunities of a naturalized citizen of the United States, and that the same be certified by the Clerk of this Court under the seal of said Court which is done accordingly.”

      1905 South Dakota census card reads: Joe Voelsch, age 72, born in Germany, in the US for 19 years.

      In 1910 census, Joachim and Mary Volsch are living with their son, Louis H. Volsch.

      In “Germans to America”: Arrived in the U.S. on Oct. 5, 1886 on the ship Lessing that embarked from Hamburg & Havre. Name listed as Joachin Volsch, age 53. Occupation listed as “Farmer”. Country listed as Mecklenburg. Manifest ID# 38886.

      Aberdeen American (Aberdeen, SD) Sunday, December 13, 1914:

      "An interesting event at Hartford was the golden wedding anniversary celebration of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Voelsch, prominent pioneer residents. About 80 friends and relatives gathered to aid them in suitably observing the event."

      Death record: Jochim Volsch, 84 yrs., 4 mo. 20 days, died in Hartford of old age and heart disease.

      From “Hartford, S.D. 1881-1981 Centennial”:
      VOLSCH, Joachim and his wife, Katerina Marie Elizabeth nee Dahling both born in Germany, immigrated to the United States in October of 1886. They were accompanied by their seven children and settled on their homestead 1 1/2 miles south of Wall Lake Corner. The homestead was granted final on the thirteenth of March, 1894.

      Upon their arrival in South Dakota, they joined the Voelsch family, related as cousins.

      The Volsch children making this trip in order of age and with their marrried names were: Maria D. W. Volsch who married Johann John Wm. Carls; Carolina “Lena” Volsch who married Albert F. Stangohr; Louis Henry Volsch who married Ella Ott and after her death her sister Jessie Ott; Wilhelmina “Minnie” Volsch who married Wilhelm Munzkie; Dorothea “Dora” Volsch who married Alexander Terrio; Frieda M. E. Volsch who married John R. Lowell, Jr.; Anna M. W. Volsch who married Friedrich J. Dahse.

      The family were all German Lutherans and faithfully atttended the West Wall Lake Lutheran Church, where their language was spoken. The records of the Church show the confirmations of all of the younger children.

      Joachim Volsch died at his home on Feb. 9, 1918, and his wife died Dec. 18, 1915.”
