In Oct. 1992, George J. Lowell provided the following information about his mother and her family. There were six sisters, listed from oldest to youngest-- Mary Volsch Carls (sons & daughters all dead); Caroline Volsch Stangohr (had 13 childrenn, lived in Howard, Clarence Stangohr is a grandson); Minnie Volsch Munzke (children all dead); Dora Volsch Terrio (Nell's mother); Freda Volsch Lowell; and Anna Volsch Dahse (children dead). There was one son, Louis Volsch, but Grandpa couldn't remember where he fit in agewise with the girls. Louis was the grandfather of Clarys Voight. Louis has two surviving children--Elsa Jordan, Clarys' mother, and Louis, Jr. Uncle Louis married his 1st wife's sister. He had three children from the first marriage and a whole passel of children from the second marriage. Mrs. Munzke, Terrio, and Dahse all died when Grandpa was very young. Grandpa can remember his dad taking his hand at the West Wall Lake Lutheran Church Cemetery at the funeral of Mrs. Dahse. She was very close to Freda. The primary reason that the Volsch's came to the U.S. was to protect Uncle Louis from going into military service.

In “Germans to America”: Arrived in the U.S. on Oct. 5, 1886 on the ship Lessing that embarked from Hamburg & Havre. Name listed as Frida Volsch, age 5. Country listed as Mecklenburg.

After coming from Germany, Freda lived with her parents at their homestead some 12 miles outside of Sioux Falls. That homestead was quite near the homestead that the Adolph Millers had. After her marriage, she then moved to John Fairfield Lowell’s property with her husband, John Russell Lowell, then across the road to the farm and home that John Russell Lowell built, and then to 1201 N. Lincoln Ave.1886, in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.

1900 Census listed under Joachim Volsch in Wall Lake Township, Minnehaha Cty, South Dakota.

1920 Census listed under John R. Lowell in Sioux Falls, Minnehaha, South Dakota.

Funeral home records list age at time of death as-- 75 yrs, 6 mos, and 6 days; time of death one thirty a.m.; cause of death; uremia--carcinomatosis--carcinoma of left breast.
