    Notes
    • From Random History of the Day on Facebook, 4 Oct. 2022:
“October 3, 1292: Posited date that Eleanor de Clare, Lady of Glamorgan, was born at Caerphilly Castle to Gilbert de Clare, 6th Earl of Hertford, 7th Earl of Gloucester, 5th Lord of Glamorgan, and Princess Joan of Acre, making her granddaughter to King Edward I of England and niece to King Edward II. Their eldest daughter, she, along with her sisters Elizabeth and Margaret, inherited her father's estates after the death of her brother, Gilbert de Clare. She married first Hugh le Despenser the Younger in 1306 and had nine children with him before his execution after the downfall of her uncle. She was confined to the Tower for two years before she was released and her lands returned to her. She was then abducted (or possibly eloped) from Hanley Castle by William la Zouche, 1st Baron Zouche of Mortimer. Her lands were seized, and she again ended up in the Tower before being released a year later after her cousin, King Edward III, took power from his mother. She had two children with la Zouche.”
