    • From the Williston Herald, Thursday, March 17, 2011:
"Ellwood Ernest Olson, 81, Tioga, died on Monday, March 14, 2011, at his winter home in Uvalde, Texas, due to cardiac arrest and now is in his eternal home.
Friends may share memories and condolences with the family at www.fulkersons.com.
His funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, March 19, 2011, at the Zion Lutheran Church, Tioga. The Rev. Rodger Olson will officiate. Interment with military honors will follow at the Zion Cemetery, Tioga.
Ellwood Ernest Olson was born on Sept. 25, 1929, in Ray to Ernest and Margaret Olson. The oldest of four children, Ellwood was baptized and confirmed at Zion Lutheran Church in Tioga. He graduated from Tioga High School in 1947 and briefly attended NDSU. He enlisted in the United States Air Force in 1950, where he was stationed in Rapid City, S.D., and Lowery Airforce Base, Colo., before being stationed in Greenland until 1954 during the Korean War.
Upon his discharge from the military, Ellwood was employed by Amerada-Hess of Tioga for 17 years, during which time he also farmed with his father. Due to his father's poor health, he resigned from Amerada-Hess but worked for "Tiger" Mike Davis and later Texakota Oil Company. After retiring from the oil field, he continued a prosperous farming career until he was 78 years old!
Ellwood married Berniece Merritt on Dec. 28, 1971 in Monango, where her father, E.T. Baumann, was the pastor. This union culminated in a "yours, mine, and ours" family: Christie Lynn, Dona Kay, Michael David, then Monica Dawn and Sarah Gaylene. Ellwood and Berniece raised their beloved family in their farmhouse just west of Tioga, where many cherished memories were made! He especially looked forward to every other Christmas when the Ellwood Olson clan would meet at various destinations to celebrate Christmas. After retiring from farming, Ellwood enjoyed wintering in Florida, then Uvalde, Texas, as of 2002.
He was an avid hunter, bowler, golfer, and fisherman who also enjoyed dancing, singing in the choir, playing piano and accordion in addition to traveling with his loving wife to see their children, grandchildren and various friends near and far. He was a respected member of the Tioga community, belonged to various organizations including the American Legion Color Guard, Tioga Medical Center, Tioga Country Club, served on the Tioga Farm Festival and Tioga Farmer’s Union Boards and humbly served his Lord and Savior.
Ellwood is survived by his wife, Berniece; four daughters, Christie (Todd) Aleshire, Grand Forks, Dona (Bruce) Hauglie, Snohomish, Wash., Monica (Wayne) Johnson, Farmington, N.M., and Sarah (Jason) Whaley, Chandler, Ariz.; one son, Michael Olson, Nashville, Tenn.; 12 grandchildren, MaKelle (Trent) Moen, Taryn and Blaine Hauglie, Chance Amberg, Oakland Olson, Nicholas Whaley, Sharley Rodahl, Jaden and Makenna Whaley, Sierra and Dakota Johnson, and Draken Olson-Beck; one great-grandchild, Brinley Moen; a sister, Carol (Leon) Rye; a brother, Ron (Judy) Olson; an uncle, Clarence (Doris) Olson; two granddogs, Lou and Chloe and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He was preceeded in death by his parents, his sister Arlene Iverson, other relatives and special friends.
Memorials are suggested to the Zion Lutheran Church in Tioga, The Johnny Smith Ministies and the Uvalde Adult Activity Center.
Friends may call from 3-7 p.m. on Friday at the Fulkerson Funeral Home in Tioga and at the church one hour prior to services."
