A head-on motorcycle, car collision Saturday left one Casa Grande resident dead and another in serious condition.
Cathy M. Whitfield, 26, died at the scene 6 miles north of McDowell Road on Bush Highway in the Mesa area after the motorcycle she and her husband, David D. Whitfield, were riding crossed the center line and struck an allegedly stolen car driven by two individuals who left on foot, a spokesman at the Maricopa County Sheriff's Department reported.
Mr. Whitfield, 33, was listed as being in intensive care today in Scottsdale Memorial Hospital, a hospital spokesman said. His leg was amputated at the scene.
The Whitfields were riding east on Bush at approximately 4:30 p.m. when their motorcycle collided with the vehicle, the spokesman said.
Services will be at 3 p.m. Wednesday for Mrs. Whitfield at the Cole and Maud Mortuary chapel, 215 S. Washington St., Casa Grande. The Rev. Buster Reeves, of Trinity Baptist Church, will officiate. After the services, private cremation is scheduled.
Mrs. Whitfield was born May 15, 1953 in Deadwood, S.D. She had been a resident of Casa Grande 10 years, and resided at 204 E. Lee. She was employed as a waitress at Bain's Arches.
Survivors include her husband, David, of Casa Grande; her daughters, Connie Marie Reidenbach and Jennifer Whitfield, both of Casa Grande; her sister, Gail Pollet, Colorado Springs. Colo.; her brothers, Monte Gunderson, Casa Grande, Rodney and Randy Gunderson, both of Rock Springs, Wyo."
