- Robert was originally named Robert Hearne Batley and was the biological son of Mary Paul Fitzpatrick and William Randle Batley. After Mary's marriage to Luther Mifflin Ward, Luther formally adopted Robert Hearne Batley and his name was changed to Robert Mifflin Ward.

“Services planned Saturday for botanist Robert M. Ward, 34”
“A memorial service for botanist Robert M. Ward, 34, will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday in the Chapel of the Cathedral Church of St. Paul. Mr. Ward, a native of San Diego, died Oct. 31 in San Francisco of a liver ailment. Remains were cremated and ashes scattered at sea.
He was the son of L. Mifflin Ward and Mary Ward. He attended San Diego city schools, Windsor Mountain School in Lenox, Mass., and received bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Connecticut College, New London, Conn.
He worked as assistant horticulturist for the San Diego Zoo from 1981 until he left for San Francisco in 1986 to become executive director of the Strybing Arboretum Society of Golden Gate Park.
Mr. Ward, a Botanical Research Fellow, published a number of scientific papers, popular articles and brochures while at the Zoo and in the doctoral program at the University of California at Irvine.
Survivors include his mother; a sister, Mary, and two brothers, Randle Batley of San Diego and William Batley of Austin, Texas.
The family has suggested contributions to Strybing Arboretum Society, Ninth Avenue at Lincoln Way, San Francisco 94122, or to Quail Botanical Gardens, 230 Quail Gardens Drive, Encinitas 92024.”
