- OBITUARY, Buchanan Funeral Home, Kewaunee, Wisconsin:
“Reynold (Bumps) Nesemann, M.D.
Reynold Michael (Doc) Nesemann, 94, passed away January 6, 2012.
Doc was born in Algoma, Wisconsin July 19, 1917 to Josie (Slaby) Nesemann. His father Reinhold Frederick Nesemann died two months before his birth. His grandparents, Frank and Mary Slaby, helped raise ‘Bumps’ living above the Hotel Stebbins.
After graduating from Algoma High School in 1935 he attended the University of Wisconsin, graduating from the University of Wisconsin Medical School in 1942, then served his internship at the Youngstown Hospital of Youngstown, Ohio through 1943 before returning to Wisconsin. Doc moved to Kewaunee in February 1944 and began practicing with E.W. Witcpalek and D. B. Dana. At that time the Wochos Hospital was in a house on Dodge Street.
He married Jean Malcheski (Miss Mal), Kewaunee High School Home Economics teacher, in Pulaski on June 29, 1946.
Under the American Medical Association Volunteer Physicians for Viet Nam, Doc treated civilians there affected by the war in 1966. He received the Ralph Hawley Distinguished Service Award from the University of Wisconsin Medical Alumni Association in 1992 and in 1994 the Physician – Citizen of the Year from the State Medical Society of Wisconsin. Over the years he hosted 21 medical students for the American Academy of Family Physicians acquainting them with the joys and challenges of Family Practice.
Doc retired from medical practice after 60+years of doing what he loved - practicing medicine where his patients were also his friends. He was proud to be a family physician, (what used to be called a General Practitioner) delivering over 2,000 babies, and remembering when penicillin was developed and the first time he administered it. Doc always said he was blessed to live in an era where he could deliver a baby, watch her grow up, take out her appendix, sign her high school diploma, kiss her at her wedding, and deliver her children and grandchildren.
He served on the Kewaunee School Board, the St Mary’s Hospital Board, and the Kewaunee Hunting and Fishing Club. He was a member of Holy Rosary Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus. Doc was an avid golfer, skier, and hunter. Long before pagers and cell phones the Alaska Lake Golf Course would signal him if he was needed when he was on call; 1 gunshot meant he could finish the hole and 2 shots meant come now. Doc skied, preferring downhill to cross-country well into his 80’s. He loved bird hunting with one of his many German Shorthairs and volunteered regularly at Kewaunee Hunting and Fishing Club projects and events. Doc is survived by his children, Mary (Hugo) de Pedro, Lexington, MA; Jane (Roger) Lowell, Seattle, WA; Michael (Susan), Falls Church, VA; John (Val) Lostine, OR; six grandchildren, Alisa de Pedro; Andrew, William and Elizabeth Lowell; John and Molly Nesemann.
In addition to his parents, Doc was preceded in death by his wife Jean, brother Edward (Frances Perry) and nephew Bob Nesemann (Marie).
Visitation will be Friday, January 13 after 4 PM at Buchanan Funeral Home. A parish wake service will be held at 7:00 p.m. Funeral Mass will be Saturday, January 14 11:00AM at Holy Rosary Church in Kewaunee with Fr. William Swichtenberg officiating followed by lunch with internment in Holy Rosary Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Kewaunee Hunting and Fishing Club or Unity Hospice.
The family is very grateful for the compassionate care Doc received from Unity Hospice and especially appreciative for the wonderful and loving kindness from the entire staff of Linden Manor. “
