The first household consists of:
1. Andreas Olsen, head of household, a self-employed farm manager (selveiendr gaardsman) and fisherman (fiskeri), born in 1850 in Mellemvolden i Sortland.
2. Kristine Hansdtr., his wife (gaardmanskone), born in 1855 in Bjørnskinn.
3. Harald Torsen, his stepson, a fisherman (fiskeri) , born in 1883 in Bjørnskinn.
4. Oskar Andreasen, his son, born in 1887 in Mellemvolden i Sortland.
5. Alf Andreasen, his son, born in 1891 in Mellemvolden i Sortland.
6. Petra Andreasdtr., his daughter, born in 1894 in Mellemvolden i Sortland.
7. Hansine Andreasdtr., his daughter, born in 1896 in Mellemvolden i Sortland.
The second household consists of:

Per the census, they all spoke Norwegian, they had corn & potatoes, animals, and fowl. They did not have bees, a vegetable garden, or a fruit garden.

Andreas Strøm Olsen got the deed on the middle part of #60 in 1873. Twelve years after that, he married Kristine Margrete Hansen fra Bjørnskinn. She was the sister of Karen Hansdtr, wife of Anders Kolbeinsen (#13), and Hans Petter Hanssen (#19).
Before she became the head farmer’s wife, she gave birth to a son Harald, born in 1883 in Bjørnskinn. His father was Tore Nilssen. Harald accompanied his mother to Vik and lived there until he emigrated in 1904.
Andreas and his brother Hans Ville owned #16 together up until 1886. Then they divided the farm into three parts and sold the northernmost farm to Edvard Jensen. Both brothers built fields in front of the farm, lengthening the “Vik-landvillage” that stretched south along the old road.
The Register of Loans shows no loan from the time Andreas and his brother built the new farm which may mean that they moved the houses south from the old farm field.
The area around Vollen had probably been pasture and perhaps hayfields earlier so the earth was pretty well worked up when the Mellomjorda people moved there. This area still had shallower fields than that which the people who had settled further north had. Exchange of land is rarely completely fair.
Kristine and Andreas raised Ragnar Paulson, the son of the Sortland photographer Oluf Paulsen, who died when his son was one year old. Ragnar married after the War in Sigerfjord.
Andreas died in 1924 when only his eldest child was married, but he was a sailor and did not work the farm. Kristine continued as the owner and in 1928 she took out a loan using the farm as collateral. When the crisis of debt came, the loan and the interest was too heavy to pay and the farm was forced to be auctioned off.
The second daughter of the house had a child in 1922 without being married. The father of the boy that Hansine Birgitte Olsen bore was called Sigurd Volden. The son settled down as an adult in Vik (#21). Petra Margrethe Olsen had a child with Konrad Olsen, a girl who died early.
The year after that, Petra got twins and the father was Egil Antonii Wiik. He married the same year elsewhere. Petra moved to Øksnes and found a spouse there.
Alf Kristian Wiik and Olga Karlene Lagesen bought first a third of the Mellomvollen, #36 Bråten, when they lived at Ånstad. After the forced auction, Alf bought his parents farm back and then #6 and #36 were put together again. Many of the farmers got income outside of the farm and Alf worked as a road supervisor. He and Olga brought up the brothers Per and Tore Vestvik. They were Olga’s sister’s sons.
