      Obituary, Seattle Daily Times (Seattle, WA) Wednesday, December 7, 1938:
      "Mrs. Norman F. Bates
      Mrs. Elizabeth Wente Bates, who lived on Camano Island near Stanwood, died yesterday n Seattle. Mrs. Bates resided thirty years in Seattle before moving to Camano Island eight years ago. She was a former treasurer of the Woman's Century Club, and a member of the Plymouth Congregational Church and the Daughters of the Nile.
      Funeral services will be held at 1 o'clock tomorrow at the Bonney-Watson Funeral Home, followed by cremation. Surviving are her husband, Norman F. Bates, a brother, Robert Wente, Pasadena, Calif., and a sister, Mrs. Eva Lind, Grand Rapids, Mich.

      “Mrs. Elizabeth Bates Passes Suddenly”
      “Funeral services for Mrs. Elizabeth Wente Bates of Camano Island, who passed away suddenly in Seattle this week, while visiting there, were held from the Bonney Watson parlors, Seattle, at 1:00 p.m. Thursday.
      “Surviving Mrs. Bates are her widower, Norman F. Bates, a brother, Robert C. Wente of Pasadena, California, and a sister, Mrs. Eva Lind of Grand Rapids, Michigan.
      “The deceased, a resident of Camano Island for a number of years, was a member of the Women’s Century Club of Seattle, the Daughters of the Nile, and also of South Camano Grange No. 930.”

      WILL:

      “Last Will and Testament of Elizabeth Wente Bates”
      “I, ELIZABETH WENTE BATES, of Seattle, King County, State of Washington, of the age of fifty-one years, being married, having no children, and being of sound and disposing mind and memory, and not acting under any duress, menace, fraud or undue influence of any person whomsoever, do hereby make, publish and declare this to be my LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT, that is to say:

      ITEM ONE:
      I direct that all my just and lawful debts be first paid, including the expenses of my last illness and funeral and also the expenses of settling my estate and any and all inheritance and succession taxes thereon.

      ITEM TWO:
      All my personal effects, my automobile, and my household goods and furniture, except my chest of wedding silver, my Sheffield plate and my cedar chest, I give and bequeath unto my husband, NORMAN F. BATES, if he survive me.

      ITEM THREE:
      I give and bequeath to the daughter of my cousin Helen Comstock, namely: JANET ELIZABETH COMSTOCK, of Silverton, Oregon, my chest of wedding silver and my silver service.

      ITEM FOUR:
      I give and bequeath to my niece, BARBARA BLAIR WENTE, of Pasadena, California, my cedar chest.

      ITEM FIVE:
      I give and bequeath to my husband, NORMAN F. BATES, all of my capital stock of Camano Development Company, a Washington corporation, and all real property owned by me or in which I have any interest at the time of my death, if he survive me.

      ITEM SIX:
      All the rest, residue and remainder of my estate, including any of the foregoing legacies that may have lapsed, I give, devise and bequeath unto my brother, ROBERT C. WENTE, to be held by him or his successor, IN TRUST, and not otherwise, for the following uses and purposes, and under the following conditions, to wit:
      1. I direct that said trustee shall sell, collect or otherwise convert into money such portions of said residue of my estate as the trustee may consider most advantageous for the purposes of this trust, and shall invest and re-invest such moneys in the name or under the control of said trustee in such amounts and in such manner as the trustee may deem adviseable. The trustee may invest said funds in mortgages, bonds or other forms of inome producng property authorized by law for the investment of trust funds; provided, however, that the trustee is hereby authorized to retain any property left by me whether or not it complies with the laws regulating investment of trust funds. The trustee shall have the absolute management and control of said funds and any other funds or property acquired by him under the terms of this will.
      2. I direct that said trustee shall pay all taxes, assessments, governmental charges, expenses of this trust and any and all other proper charges against this trust or the property held under it, and pay to himself reasonable compensation for the performance of the duties hereunder. I direct that in the handling of my estate, if any extraordinary benefits shall accrue upon stocks or bonds held by said trustee under the terms of this will, the income of which stocks or bonds is to be paid to any person or persons hereafter mentioned, the trustee shall be the sole judge of whether such extraordinary benefits constitute income or principal. Premiums and discounts on securities purchased or sold are not to be amortized.
      3. I direct that in the event of the resignation or death of Robert C. Wente, he may in writing designate his successor as the trustee of this trust; and should he not do so, or the person or institution so named decline to act, or resign, then his or its successor as trustee shall be Michigan Trust Company of Grand Rapids, Michigan, and such successor or successors shall have all the powers and duties of the trustee as herein provided.
      4. I direct that out of my trust estate the trustee shall set aside a fund of the value of $15,000.00 and shall pay all the net income therefrom, at convenient intervals to my beloved sister, EVA M. LYND, of Grand Rapids, Michigan, during her llifetime, and that upon the death of said Eva M. Lynd, or if she shall predecease me, then upon my death, the trustee shall thereupon distribute one-fourth (1/4) of the said fund to my niece, BARBARA BLAIR WENTE, of Pasadena, California, daughter of said Robert C. Wente; one-fourth (1/4) of said fund to my niece, MARGARET LYND, of Grand Rapids, Michigan, daughter of said Eva M. Lynd; one-fourth (1/4) of said fund to my niece, RUTH LYND KAUFMAN, of Grand Rapids, Michigan, daughter of said Eva M. Lynd, and one-fourth (1/4) of said fund shall remain in the hands of the trustee, duly invested as above provided, and the income thereof, as well as such portions of the principal as the trustee, in his or its sole discretion, may deeem expedient or advisable, shall be used and expended fo the benefit of my niece, MABEL LYND, of Grand Rapids, Michigan, daughter of said Eva M. Lynd, during her lifetime; and upon the death of said Mable Lynd, the balance then remaining, if any, shall be distributed to the said Margaret Lynd and Ruth Lynd Kaufman, share and share alike, or their heirs, respectively.
      5. After ample provision has been made by my said trustee for the $15,000 fund above mentioned, I direct that out of any funds or property then remaining in my said trust estate, said trustee shall pay to my beloved sister, OLIVE M. WENTE, of Hollywood, California, the sum of five thousand dollars ($5,000.00) if she survive me, but if she be not living at the time of my death then this legacy shall lapse; and to my beloved brother, ROBERT C. WENTE, of Pasadena, California, or his heirs, the sum of five thousand dollars ($5,000.00); and in case there be not sufficient funds in said trust estate to pay said bequests in full, I direct that any such deficiency be pro-rated equally between them.
      6. After provision shall have been made for payment of the bequests mentioned in sub-paragraph five above, I direct that out of any funds then remaining in my said trust estate my said trustee shall pay to HATASU TEMPLE NO. 1, DAUGHTERS OF THE NILE, Seattle, Washington, the sum of one thousand dollars ($1,000.00) to be used by such society for the purchase of materials in connection with the work for crippled children conducted by the Ancient Arabic Order of Nobles of the Mystic Shrine, or its successor.
      7. If there be any funds then remaining in said trust estate, I direct that they shall be added to and become a part of the fifteen thousand dollar ($15,000.00) fund provided for in sub-paragraph four above.
      8. No assignment or order by any beneficiary by way of anticipation of any part of the trusts herein created shall be valid, but the income shall be paid by the trustee direct to the person entitled to receive it or deposted to the beneficiary’s account in some bank of good standing and repute without regard to any assignment or order, or else held by the trustee to be used by him for the benefit of the beneficiary as in the case above provided; nor can the principal of said trusts become attached by trustee process or garnishmnent while in the hands of the trustee.

      ITEM SEVEN:
      I HEREBY NOMINATE AND APPOINT my husband NORMAN F. BATES, to act as executor of this my last will and testament, and I direct that as such executor he shall have full power to administer my estate, including the power to sell and convey any or all of my property, real, personal, or mixed, and to invest and reinvest the same freely, without being required to give any bond, undertaking or security for the performance thereof, and without the intervention of any court, except insofar as the same may be necessary for the probate of this will and such other procedure only as may be required in the case of non-intervention wills. I direct my said executor to employ as attorney for my estate my friend Edward M. Hay of Seattle, Washington.

      ITEM EIGHT:
      I HEREBY REVOKE any and all former wills by me at any time made.

      “CODICIL TO LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT OF ELIZABETH WENTE BATES”

      I, ELIZABETH WENTE BATES, a resident of the State of Washington, of the age of fifty-four years, being married, having no children, and being of sound and disposing mind and memory, and not acting under any duress, menace, fraud or undue influence of any person whosoever, do hereby make, publish and declare this to be a Codicil to my LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT, made and executed January 16, 1935 in the presence of E. M. Hay and Virginia L. Cleaver; that is to say:

      ITEM ONE:
      In my said LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT in sub-paragraph 5 of Item VI, I provided that the trustee therein mentioned should pay to my beloved sister, OLIVE M. WENTE, the sum of Five thousand ($5,000.00) dollars, if she survive me. My sister, OLIVE M. WENTE, having recently died, I hereby direct that my said trustee pay the amount of said intended bequest to my beloved brother, ROBERT C. WENTE of Pasadena, California, or his heirs.

      IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand and seal at Seattle, Washington, this third day of December, 1938.
