“”Geologist Killed
REDWOOD CITY, Sept. 17.-
A retired geologist was killed last night when he was hurled from a tractor and crushed beneath the wheels of a trailer it was pulling.
Two boys were riding on the trailer when it went out of control down a steep hill. They were thrown clear and were not injured.
Killed was Ernest H. Quayle, 65, retired geologist for the Saudi-Arabian Oil company. A resident of Salt Lake City, Quayle had been in California for the past two months to help William Palmer with a grading and water conservtion project at Palmer’s ranch at 407 Georgia Lane, Portola Valley.
Deputy Sheriff George Erickson reported that the accident happened at 6 p.m. while Quayle was pulling the trailer, filled with top soil, down a steep dirt road from the Robert Evans residence at 415 Georgia Lane.
Two boys, Eddie Gann, 11, 290 Nathhorst place, and Dale Palmer, son of Quayle’s employer, were riding on the load of top soil.
OUT OF GEAR
The boys told Erickson that the tractor seemed to jump out of gear and the brakes would not hold. The tractor and trailer plummeted down the hill, crashed through a barbed wire fence and plunged down an embankment, jackknifing at the bottom.
The boys were thrown clear but Quayle fell between the trailer and tractor and his head was crushed by a wheel of the trailer...[NOTE: Remainder of article focused on the life of Quayle and his survivors.]
