News article: "Words that Ring True: Children recall mother's advice" in Argus Leader (Sioux Falls, South Dakota) 10 May 1987, Sun
"Elsa Jordan's advice to her children reaped them years of musical enjoyment. Although she had little money to spend while raising three children on a farm west of Wall Lake, Jordan made sacrifices for her family. "Living on a farm, the money for the ladies was egg money," daughter Ardeth Rang of Sioux Falls said. "With that money Mother never bought herself clothing or anything. She took us 12 miles to a crippled lady for piano lessons. She took her mending along and would sit there."
Jordan, now 85, also encouraged her children to perform. Rang, her sister Clarice Voigt of Sioux Falls, and brother Arvid Jordan of Wall Lake, answered the Argus Leaer's request for stories about mother's wise advice.
They wrote: "We protested when asked to play for 'people' saying, 'Mother, they play better than we do.' Her reply: 'If they can do better, they should be on the stage, too.'"
The children heeded her advice and kept up with piano playing and singing. Arvid Jordan also plays accordion, mouth harp and cornet. Clarice plays the organ. The three often sing as a trio for weddings and funerals. Ardeth sings in a barbershop quartet and a chorus.
Now the musical talent has flowed through the generations to Elsa's great-grandchildren…."

Obituary: Argus Leader, Sioux Falls, SD Thursday, Dec. 1, 1994:
“Elsa Jordan, who left quilted legacy of love, dies at 92.”
By Denise D. Tucker, Argus Leader Staff
“Elsa Jordan’s legacy was left in the quilts and potholders that she made from old clothes and scraps of material.
She was one of the original people to recycle,” said Jordan’s daughter, Clarice Voigt.
Jordan, 92, of 401 W. Second St., died Tuesday, Nov. 29, 1994, in the Good Samaritan Center.
She made quilts for her family and sewed potholders and lap robes for the nursing home residents.
“She did it for the love of people,” Voigt said. “Sewing was a big love of hers.”
Jordan began sewing on a treadle machine, which wasn’t electric, and made her children pajamas and doll clothes. She later made pajamas for her grandchildren.
She made numerous quilts over the years and once made 11 jean quilts for her great-grandchildren.
“Whenever anybody got engaged, she would make a quilt from their favorite clothes,” said Jordan’s daughter, Ardeth Rang.
Jordan took old blankets and used them to make potholders.
“She would featherstitch them,” Voigt said. “She literally made hundreds of them.”
Jordan also used the leftovers from quilt making for the potholders.
“It was a very unique and very creative,” Voigt said.
The lap robes are small quilts that cover the residents’ legs, Voigt said. They are tied to the person and to their wheelchair by an apron string.
“They’re very special, because they do keep the residents warm,” she said.
“She took 35 lap robes to the center one Christmas,” Rang said. “She was just a generous person.”
Jordan didn’t begin sewing the potholders and lap robes until she was in her 80s. Eventually, she had to stop making them because she lost her eyesight.
“But she has left a beautiful legacy,” Voigt said.
Elsa Volsch was born March 3, 1902, in Wall Lake. She grew up and attended country school near Wall Lake. She was employed at the Wall Lake Roller Rink and Resort.

After they retired from farming in 1951, they moved into Sioux Falls. During her retirement, she worked as a domestic for many Sioux Falls families.
She was a life member of the Women’s Society of Christian Service and United Methodist Women and a member of the First United Methodist Church in Sioux Falls.
