They slept in cellars where the floor was covered with straw, living with domestic animals, and suffering all the ills, mental and phyhysical, that were the usual results of such surroundings. In Dvinsk, where my father was born, he was known by the surname Zok. He was the son of Julius L. Zok (Yehuda Leib Zak), after which I am named, and Bessie Zok (Basheva Zak), who is the only grandparent of mine with whom I came into personal contact.”

From Julius Sackman written in 1933, addressed to Marc Stone, “Your grandparents, Sackman, had these children, all of them have survived. Aside from your dad [Julius], there is a sister, Bessie, and a brother, Abe.”
