      “Jessie S. Ward Dies in Hospital”:
      “Mrs. Jessie S. Ward, 71, of 3945 Third Ave., a member of an early San Diego family and a descendant of a Declaration of Independence signer, died yesterday in a local hospital.
      Mrs. Ward was vice chairman of the Ladies Committee of the 1935-36 Exposition. After the exposition closed she was executive director of the House of Hospitality from 1937 to 1941 and from 1946 to 1949.
      She was a past president of the Zlac Rowing Club and the Boys and Girls Aid Society of San Diego. She was a member of the Wednesday Club, and Fine Arts Society of San Diego and the San Diego Historical Society.
      Her husband, the late John McCartney Ward, was the son of state Sen. M. L. Ward, who died in 1930.
      Mrs. Ward was born Feb. 4, 1887 in Markleville, PA. She came to California in 1899 with her parents, living first at Fifth and Cedar streets and later at the northwest corner of First and Laurel streets.
      She was a direct descendant of Moses Grant, a preacher involved in the Boston Tea Party, and Thomas Mifflin, a Pennsylvania governor, Declaration of Independence signer and a Revolutionary War general under George Washington.
      Survivors include three sons, Luther, a local attorney; John, a Houston, Tex., engineer, and Philip, of Geneva, Switzerland, a sales engineer for Convair; two brothers, William T. Smith of Phoenix, Ariz., and Walter Smith of San Diego, and three grandchildren in Switzerland.
      Services are pending at Johnson-Saum & Knobel Mortuary.”
