Jim was born and raised in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, a third-generation descendant of pioneer homesteaders from New England and Germany. He was an avid football player in high school and attended the University of South Dakota. During the years that he worked at Lakeside Dairy in Sioux Falls, he also farmed with his father, which brought him great joy. Later, Jim became a federal meat inspector, residing in Pipestone, Minnesota, for twenty years. Shopping for meat became a new experience for family members, after Jim completed his meat inspection training. He put his skills to good use in the medical arena, teaching emergency medical technician classes for over ten years while in Pipestone.
Upon his retirement in 1991, he and his wife returned to Sioux Falls, where Jim drove a school bus on a part-time basis. He was deeply devoted to his parents and spent considerable amounts of his retirement time caring for them so that they could continue to live independently.
The loves of his life were his wife of 48 years, Alice, and their three children, Jerry, Linda, and Leann, in whom he took great pride. He cherished being “Grandpa” to his two grandsons, Ryan and Matt, and “Papa” to his granddaughter, Megan. He took special care to teach them the art of fishing, his favorite pastime.
Jim loved people and was a devoted friend to many, always there to lend a helping hand to those in need. He was a great talker and relished having an eager listener. He enjoyed traveling across the countryside and had looked forward to more trips in his motor home. His only challenge was that he stopped so often to stretch, visit, and eat, that it took him twice as long to get anywhere.
Grateful for having shared his life are his wife, Alice Lowell, Sioux Falls, Minnehaha, South Dakota; son, Gerald Lowell and his partner, Mitchell Block, San Diego, California; daughter, Linda Geraets and her husband, Tom, Pierre, South Dakotata, and their sons, Ryan and Matthew; daughter, Leann Zelhart and her husband, Jeff, Durango, Colorado, and their daughter, Megan Zelhart; 2 brothers, John Lowell and his wife, JoAnne, Kalispell, Montana, Roger Lowell and his wife, Jane, Seattle, Washington; and many nieces and nephews.
The family of Jim Lowell thanks you for your support and presence today. An invitation is extended to join them in the Fellowship Hall of First Lutheran Church for refreshments and fellowship following the committal service.”
On verso of memorial brochure appeared the following:
“The Fisherman’s Prayer
God, grant that I may fish until my dying day,
And when I come to my last cast,
I’ll then most humbly pray:
When in the Lord’s safe landing net
I’m peacefully asleep,
That in His mercy I’ll be judged
As good enough to keep.”
Newspaper Clipping appearing in the Sioux Falls Argus Leader on Saturday, January 11, 1997:

| Heirlooms. Lowell, G. James and Alice Nelson Lowell. Family Bible. This Bible was selected by Alice and Jim, using "credits" from a work-related performance program at Lakeside Dairy that enabled employees to select items for their home. This Bible was always kept on the second shelf of a table in the living room. The Bible had a section containing colorful illustrations of some of the stories it contained. Alice and Jim's children liked to look at these pictures, but they always had to wash their hands before they could touch this Bible. |
