Heirlooms. McCartney Clock
Heirlooms. McCartney Clock
This "eight day" clock originally belonged to Judge John McCartney. When he and his family moved from Vinton, Iowa to National City, California, in 1887, the clock was already old and the McCartneys didn't want to take it with them. Judge McCartney then gave the clock to his son, George McCartney and his wife Minnie Lowell McCartney. When George McCartney died unexpectedly in Parker, South Dakota, his young wife, Minnie, brought the clock with her to the farm that she acquired. After Minnie's death, her only daughter, Flora, inherited the clock. After Flora's death in 1974, the clock was inherited by her cousin, George John Lowell. When George Lowell received the clock, it had no hands, no face, and had a damaged case with split wood at the top. George repaired the clock with the assistance of a clock repair professional in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. When George and his wife, Hazel Miller Lowell, died (in 1973 and 1974 respectively), their youngest son, Roger L. Lowell inherited the clock. It now rests on a mantel in Seattle, Washington.
